Perhaps the most iconic of Marbella’s glamorous areas, the Golden Mile exudes style, understated glamour and luxurious living. The grand villas and penthouses are tucked away between the lush green landscape that characterises much of this area, whilst upmarket hotels, beach clubs, restaurants and nightclubs are host to the international jet-set, many of whom live here year round. The Golden Mile summarizes Marbella and all of it’s opulence.
The Golden Mile is the connecting stretch of beach, which joins the western edge of Marbella town with the marina of Puerto Banus, creating a gentle sweep of coastline and ascending the first slopes of the coastal plain. On the beachside are private urbanizations and grander villas, as well as famous hotels, luxurious beach clubs and exclusive restaurants, boutiques, and nightclubs – the majority which are set on the front line of the beach halfway between Marbella and Puerto Banus.
If you turn off the main boulevard towards the mountainside, you enter a prestigious residential area that stretches a few kilometres inland towards the distinct outlines of La Concha Mountain and the stunning views of Istan. Though just a few minutes drive from the shops, services and social scene of central Marbella, this is an area of peace and tranquility, where the luscious, well maintained gardens give privacy to the large estates and luxury developments.
The main residential complexes that fall within the Golden Mile are the Marbella Club residences , Puente Romano and Rio Verde on the beachside, with Las Lomas del Marbella Club, Camojan, Marbella Hill Club, and Sierra Blanca, Nagueles on the mountainside.
Icons of luxurious living
With a background rich in history and decadence, the Golden Mile is not surprisingly frequented by establishments that have become icons in their own right. The Marbella Club and Puente Romano hotel have continued to flourish, featuring a glamorous beach club, the famous nightclub, Suite and a private tennis complex that also hosts concerts by world recognized singers each summer. Golf clubs, racket clubs and gyms, boutiques, delicatessen and stylish restaurants and cafés discreetly line the stylish boulevard most noted for its parks and lush greenery.
Equally discreet, yet decadent are nightlife venues such as Olivia Valère and A Small World cafe. These stunning venues cater to an international clientele, including celebrities ranging from Bruce Willis and Sharon Stone to Brad Pitt and Antonio Banderas. Olivia Valère, especially, has become an integral part of the trendy Marbella nightlife scene, offering the famous restaurant Babilonia, lounge bars and nightclub ambiences within a single, Marrakech-inspired location.
Inspite of this, the Golden Mile is a peaceful area, offering enough space and vegetation to provide residents and visitors alike with privacy and discretion. The yachts calmly bobbing in the water just off the beach, add the final touch to an area which is entirely dedicated to the art of luxurious living – and one that has become the epicenter behind the glamorous reputation of Marbella.
